Many of you around the world may have been avidly following the progress of DJ Jazzy Jeff‘s PLAYlist collective as they have strived to complete the recording, production, and release of the ‘Chasing Goosebumps’ project in just 7 days. Borne out of last summers Playlist retreat – an assembly of the some of the worlds most innovative young musicians of the moment covering soul, hip-hop, jazz, and all the stops in-between – this cutting edge project had the ambitious aim of recording and releasing an lp of quality in just 7 days. This they have definitely managed to do with the quality quotient at maximum. This masterful melange of soul, r’n’b, hip-hop and jazz is an incredible distillation of all the creative talents involved for which they can all be supremely proud. Within these forward thinking 15 tracks I can hear the influences of Charles Stepney (NRC and EWF), Leroy Hutson, Leon Ware, Curtis Mayfield, Patrice Rushen, Ronnie Foster, Prince and so much more. Standout tunes for me are ‘This Could Be Us’, ‘Chasing Goosebumps’ (killin’ vocal arrangements), ‘Faceless’ and ‘Take My Time’ (sublime string arrangements and horns). This whole set is seriously lit and should be a wake up call to all who have the talent and the creative genius to now go and produce something for themselves to match the artistic beauty and integrity of this project – something that is needed now more than ever.
Musicians involved include, vocalist Glenn Lewis, James Poyser, Andre Harris, Matt Cappy, Tall Black Guy, Kaidi Tatham, Daniel Crawford, Avery Sunshine, J Period, Teeko, SiR, Aaron Draper, Steve McKie, Stro Elliott, Eric Lau, Maimouna Youssef, Masego, Rich Medina, Eric Roberson, Jeff Bradshaw, Killiam Shakespeare and Aaron Camper.
