Jordan Rakei is one of those rare original voices that comes along from time to time that cannot be ignored. The fact that this future soul don originates from Brisbane Australia (via his birth place of NZ) is even more surprising. His latest lp, ‘Cloak’, is a masterclass in sublime vocals, killing beats, and seminal arrangements. ‘Cloak’, his third album after ‘Franklin’s Room’ and ‘Groove Curse’ is 13 track monster that steers us through elements of soul, gospel, and jazz in a melange of deep beats that defies genre.
On the occasions that I have chatted to this gentle self effacing soul I have been left with the feeling that we have only seen a fraction of the great musical things that this talented young man has to offer.
