After an overly long wait for this project to drop the new lp from gifted musician Nate Smith ‘Kinsfolk – Postcards From Everywhere’ is finally here. Virginia born and raised Smith got his first break working with the legendary Betty Carter and has gone on to work with Ravi Coltrane, Jose James (where I first came across him) , Nicholas Payton, John Pattituci, Adam Rogers, Regina Carter, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Lionel Loueke, and many others. His effortless drumming style and the quality of his compositions has set this collection apart from the rest. From the soulful masterpiece that is ’Disenchantment: The Weight (feat. Amma Whatt)’ to the funked up melodic fusion of ’Skip Step’ this lp is simply stunning. Tunes such as ‘Bounce pts I and II’ with its tight expressive funk stylings, the melancholic ‘Home Free’ and the catchy ‘Morning and Allison’ all give this collection some serious depth. To add to my joy my favourite lady Gretchen Parlato adds her vocal weight to the sublime composition ‘Pages’. 2017 will be an incredible year for music if there are more lp’s as quality laden as this one on the horizon. This really is an outstanding piece of work and is definitely worthy of your investigation.
‘Kinsfolk – Postcards From Everywhere’ by Nate Smith is now available on Ropeadope records.
